freshwater crustaceans belonging to the order Anostraca, found naturally in temporary ponds and seasonal wetlands. They are ancient aquatic species capable of producing dormant cysts (resting eggs) that withstand drying and extreme environmental conditions. When rehydrated, the eggs hatch into transparent, gracefully swimming shrimp that form an essential part of many freshwater food chains.
