Beavertail fairy shrimp (Thamnocephalus platyurus) are a species of fairy shrimp, small freshwater crustaceans in the order Anostraca, known for their distinctive broad, paddle- or beaver tail-shaped abdomen that sets them apart from other fairy shrimp. Native to the western United States (e.g., Arizona, New Mexico, Wyoming, and Texas), they inhabit temporary wetlands like vernal pools, rock pools, and seasonal playas, where they thrive in ephemeral waters that dry up periodically.
